About Route & Time Planner
Plan route duration, fuel stops, and trip costs for driving, cycling, hiking, and motorcycle trips. Calculate ETA with breaks, fuel needs, and travel expenses in one comprehensive tool.
What This Tool Does
- Route Time Calculator: Estimate moving time and total ETA including breaks for any mode of travel—driving, cycling, hiking, or motorcycle.
- Fuel Planner: Calculate fuel needs and costs for driving and motorcycle trips. Get fuel stop recommendations for long rides.
- Pace Calculator: For cyclists and hikers, calculate time based on pace per kilometer with break time included.
- Range Planner: For motorcyclists, estimate safe range based on tank size, fuel efficiency, and reserve requirements.
When to Use This Tool
- Road Trip Planning: Calculate driving time, fuel costs, and toll expenses for car trips. Budget for the full journey including breaks.
- Motorcycle Adventures: Plan fuel stops based on your bike's range. Ensure you never run low on remote stretches.
- Cycling Events: Estimate finish time based on your pace. Plan rest stops and food breaks for century rides.
- Hiking Trips: Calculate hiking time based on distance and pace. Plan rest breaks and know when you'll reach camp.
- Delivery Planning: Estimate arrival times for deliveries. Calculate fuel costs for expense reporting.
How to Use
- Step 1: Select your travel mode (Driving, Cycling, Hiking, or Motorcycle).
- Step 2: Enter the total distance in kilometers.
- Step 3: Input your average speed (km/h) or pace (min/km for cycling/hiking).
- Step 4: Add planned break time in minutes.
- Step 5 (optional): For driving/motorcycle: enter fuel efficiency, fuel price, and toll costs.
- Step 6 (motorcycle only): Enter tank size and reserve percentage for fuel stop planning.
- Step 7: Review results: moving time, total ETA, fuel needs, and cost estimates.
Default Speeds by Mode
- Driving: 80 km/h average (highway and city mixed)
- Cycling: 20 km/h average (recreational pace)
- Hiking: 5 km/h average (moderate terrain)
- Motorcycle: 60 km/h average (touring pace)
- Adjust these based on your specific conditions—mountain roads, traffic, fitness level, or weather.
Fuel Stop Planning for Motorcycles
- Safe Range: Calculated as tank size × fuel efficiency × (1 - reserve%). This is your maximum range before hitting reserve.
- Stop Interval: Recommended to refuel at 80% of safe range for safety margin. Never plan to run to empty.
- Example: 18L tank, 20 km/L efficiency, 12% reserve = 317 km safe range. Stop every 254 km.
- For remote areas, reduce stop interval to 60-70% of safe range for extra safety.
Tips for Accurate Estimates
- ✓ Adjust for Conditions: Reduce speed estimates for mountain roads, traffic, poor weather, or heavy loads.
- ✓ Include All Breaks: Add time for fuel stops, food breaks, rest stops, and sightseeing. Plan 10-15 min every 2 hours.
- ✓ Buffer Time: Add 10-20% buffer for unexpected delays—construction, wrong turns, or extended breaks.
- ✓ Fuel Efficiency Varies: Highway driving gets better mileage than city. Motorcycles vary greatly with riding style.
- ✓ Check Real Data: Use past trip data or apps to refine your speed and fuel efficiency estimates.
Pace Calculation for Cyclists and Hikers
- Cycling Pace: Recreational cyclists average 15-25 km/h (2:24-4:00 min/km). Road cyclists may average 30+ km/h.
- Hiking Pace: Flat trails: 4-6 km/h. Moderate hills: 3-4 km/h. Steep terrain: 2-3 km/h.
- Break Planning: Plan 5-10 min breaks every hour for cycling, 10-15 min every 1-2 hours for hiking.
- Elevation Matters: Add 1 minute per 10 meters of elevation gain for hiking pace estimates.
Example Calculations
- Road Trip: 420 km at 80 km/h, 40 min breaks, 16 km/L, 1.50/L fuel, 12 tolls = 5.25 h driving, 5.9 h total, 26.3 L fuel, $51.45 total cost.
- Motorcycle Ride: 640 km, 18L tank, 20 km/L, 12% reserve = 317 km safe range, stop every 254 km, 2 fuel stops needed.
- Cycling Century: 160 km at 20 km/h (3:00 min/km), 60 min breaks = 8 h riding, 9 h total ETA.
- Hiking Trip: 24 km at 5 km/h (12:00 min/km), 35 min breaks = 4.8 h hiking, 5.4 h total.
